Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of files that contained little new data.
